Digital Marketing – What not to do

The prime aim of any digital marketing agency is to help clients identify and engage with more customers, as well as converting traffic into actual business for companies. There are plenty of ways of doing this successfully, but like any discipline there are also things that need to be avoided or else your digital marketing strategy might not reap the rewards you were hoping for.

Let’s take a look at some of the things you shouldn’t do with digital marketing.

Underestimate digital marketing

One of the big errors that can be made is not taking your digital marketing as seriously as your more “traditional” marketing. Your digital marketing agency will no doubt tell you that a successful marketing strategy needs to be consistent, and it needs to be invested in. This means that it can’t just be an afterthought; integrating it into your overall marketing strategy is definitely the way to go

Not monitoring it properly

Once you have made the commitment to digital marketing, it needs to be monitored properly so that you can work out what’s working and what you might need to continue to work on. Failing to do this is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. It’s something that your digital marketing agency should be able to take care of for you, but as a business it helps if you know exactly what you want to get out of your marketing so it can be monitored effectively.

For example, think about the key performance indicators that will matter to you, such as how many unique and new visitors have been to your site as a result of your marketing. Other KPIs include things like how long people spend on your site, whether people convert their interest into a purchase, and how many people bounce out of your site quickly after arriving.

Not implement good landing pages

When a web user clicks on an ad, they will be taken to a landing page. This landing page needs to be relevant, and filled with good quality content. Not developing and implementing good landing pages is a definite error when it comes to digital marketing. Bear in mind that you might need to develop new pages for your website for this, although in some cases you might already have suitable pages that you can use as landing pages.

Think about what the purpose of that landing page is though. Do you want to inform people, encourage them to sign up for something or make a purchase? The aim of your ad and the landing page will naturally determine how you go about developing this.

Use the wrong solution

Any digital marketing agency will tell you that there are plenty of ways you can market things online. You can use SEO, social media, paid advertising campaigns and much more. However, you need to be confident that you are using the right option for what you are trying to do. Is your target audience to be found on social media sites, or might you have to look elsewhere to promote your business online? Using the most appropriate methods for your digital marketing will help ensure you have the best chance of good results.

Not knowing the market

It sounds obvious, but before you invest in digital marketing you need to be confident that it will offer you a good return on investment. You need to know that the demand is there before you begin, or else the project could end up being a waste of your resources. This is why it is so important to undertake some research before launching a digital marketing campaign; you need to know how much potential there is for a good return so you can work out how successful your efforts have been.
