Why We Love Modular Design

If you are looking to have a new website built, the options available to you might seem polarised in terms of budget and timelines.

On the one hand, you could have a state-of-the-art website built at high cost, making use of highly creative design, bespoke UX and high end technology.

On the other hand, you could have a cheap website built using pre-designed templates, which invariably ends up looking one of two ways: exactly the same as your competitors’ websites, or worse.

The lack of a “middle ground” option can be frustrating, which is why Modular Design has become increasingly popular in recent years.

Let’s take a look at what makes Modular Design so attractive.

What Is Modular Design?

The most well known providers of Modular Design are build-your-own-website services like Wix and Squarespace.

Agencies have begun to offer a higher quality alternative to these which boasts greater flexibility, design cohesiveness and scalability.

As part of this process, clients are provided with a vast library of pre-designed and customisable “modules” from which pages can be constructed through their website’s backend.

This allows for the creation of flexible and purpose built web pages, giving the impression of a fully bespoke website design without the added cost. It also guarantees a consistent look and feel, as the modules and their sub components are part of a larger, cohesive design system.

Having permanent access to this library also means that you will have creative autonomy on your website, as you will be able to edit existing pages and create new ones whenever necessary.

Modular Design can therefore be seen as an improvement upon the traditional page templates format, which requires content to be adapted to suit each template’s design, thus limiting flexibility and making it difficult to optimise the page’s SEO performance and User Experience.

In a Nutshell: The Benefits of Modular Design

  • Flexibility: Create customised pages using a library of bespoke-designed modules
  • Scalability: Easily add new custom pages and edit existing pages
  • Cohesiveness: No matter how your pages are arranged, the modules used will have been designed as part of a set, guaranteeing a strong, branded look and feel
  • Content-first: Create pages that suit your content needs, without being restricted to set templates; each page will be constructed with the content it holds in mind

What Sets JBi's Modular Design Apart

We start every project with a Discovery process, during which we spend time defining exactly what needs to be achieved with your new website, as well as building a strong understanding of your audience’s wants and needs.

Once the Discovery phase is complete, the conceptualisation phase begins. As part of this process, we craft a visual language that ties into your brand messaging, allowing us to design a bespoke website that reflects your brand positioning.

This provides a stark contrast to the off-the-shelf website that others might deliver as part of a Modular Design project, offering a “best of both worlds” solution which provides all the flexibility and autonomy of a modular website, without compromising on look and feel.
