Burger King is talking to your devices

Burger King debuted a clever but annoying new ad which triggers Android and Google Home devices.

In the ad, a Burger King employee tells us about the restaurant’s flagship burger – the Whopper but acknowledges the limited time so instead calls upon Google to tell you more about the burger. The man leans in and says “Ok Google, what is the Whopper burger?” which will set off any listening Android of Google Home devices, reading aloud the burger’s Wikipedia page.

The internet was quick to respond, people realised they could edit the Wikipedia page for the Whopper, essentially changing Google’s response. The Wikipedia page has since been locked so no further changes could be made and Google has now stopped their devices from responding to the ad, though, it will still respond to if you ask.

There’s no doubt this is a clever marketing ploy but it’s very invasive and makes us wish Google, Siri and Alexa could be tuned to recognise their owner’s voice and no one else’s. Imagine if an ad asked Google to turn off or on any connected devices…

Prepare to see a lot of these ads.
