Gabby Douglas, a 16 year African American who won a double gold medal, has become a topic of a heated debate. This debate isn’t about her skills as an athlete, or about the London 2012 Games in general. It is in fact about the style of her hair!

Twitter has a reputation of sparking debates, and the London 2012 Olympic Games are no exception to it. Gabrielle Douglas has not only done her nation and her team proud, but she has broken records. She is the first African-American Olympic all-around champion!

Despite her historic achievements, users on Twitter have begun to debate about her hairstyle?! The social network is split between supporters of her hairstyle, and not so approving individuals. Here are a couple of examples of such tweets:

“I don’t care… 16 or 26, black or white… gabby douglas’ hair is ratch…”

Brianna Wiggins (@CoPuffCo) Wrote:

“Just a thought… Can Destinee Hooker PLEASE help Gabby Douglas with her hair? Actually anyone on the v ball team…”

Gabby Douglas’ Hair has nothing to do with London 2012

I was watching her perform so well during the London 2012 Games, and I was impressed by the perfection and agility she obviously worked so hard to gain. The last thing I was thinking about was her hair. I work in a digital agency based in London, so I’m hardly the hair expert, but it makes sense for her hair to be tied back in such a manner, no?

It’s always funny how a lot of people assume they’re safe just because they are using Twitter, but fail to remember that it has been the platform for careless people’s arrest recently. Let’s hope this incident blows over and doesn’t overshadow Gabby’s achievements. I’m sure she’s still smiling.
