Good news for retailers

If you are interested in E-Commerce website design, you will no doubt have been pleased to hear the recent news about the E-Commerce industry. We have long known that E-Commerce is big business, and that the UK is the e-retail capital of Europe with an industry worth billions. The latest news does nothing to dispel that notion, and offers some interesting insights for anyone working in E-Commerce.

Increase in sales for E-Commerce websites in July 2012

One piece of news relates to the E-Commerce statistics from July, which shows that they had the highest level of growth this year. Specifically, there was a 17% jump in year on year sales for July 2012, reports IMRG. A couple of reasons were given for the favourable figures; the European Championship football and the bad weather that kept people at home seem to have played a part in the results.

It is thought that around £6.5 billion was spent online, which works out as a fairly impressive £128 per person. Clothing sales were particularly popular during July, thanks in part to the range of discounts and promotions that many E-Commerce retailers have been pushing lately.

Mobile Commerce proving to be popular

Something else that is sure to be of interest to people in E-Commerce website design is that mobile commerce is also increasingly popular and has seen impressive sales figures; perhaps something for e-retailers to take on board the next time they are looking to update their E-Commerce website design. The world of mobile retail can no longer be ignored. It has achieved 356% year on year growth and retailers, according to IMRG, are currently getting about 8% of their total digital income from mobiles.

Better delivery services

The other bit of news that fans of E-Commerce website design and the industry more generally are likely to be interested in is the report that the Royal Mail will be extending its neighbour delivery scheme. This might not immediately seem like a source of much interest, but delivery has always been an issue when it comes to online shopping.

Both E-Commerce retailers and people buying online have had to overcome issues in terms of delivery, which isn’t always easy to organise and can lead to inconveniences on both sides of the transaction. The Royal Mail neighbour delivery scheme is something that could help to address that after the pilot scheme found that less than 1% didn’t want their packages to be left with neighbours. It has also been reported that there was a 90% satisfaction rate with the pilot and people can opt out through putting signs in their windows.

It might only be one solution from one delivery provider, but as more people start to shop online and E-Commerce website design and retail become ever more popular, it is certainly a welcome development. Anything that makes the experience easier and more convenient is likely to be welcomed, and it seems that the scheme has gone well so far.

Overall, it seems safe to say that E-Commerce will continue to grow and that E-Commerce website design will continue to be vital to anyone looking to get into the e-retail business. These latest news stories are a good indicator of the health of the industry, as well as the challenges that we still need to overcome.
